A 60-Year-Old Wind Orchestra Seeks New Blood to Survive
The Lohmühle Wind Orchestra has been bringing music to the Lower Rhine for 60 years. Founded in 1966, the group once had 25 young musicians—but today, its 15 members are all aged over 52. Now, the orchestra is looking for new players to keep its tradition alive. The orchestra started with a mix of traditional wind music and modern entertainment hits. Over time, its focus on camaraderie grew stronger, with rehearsals and social events deepening bonds among members. Shared breaks, sometimes including a schnapps, and joint celebrations have helped forge lasting friendships.
Rehearsals take place every Monday, with instruments available for those who need them. A separate Thursday session, called the 'development rehearsal,' helps new members improve their ensemble playing and sight-reading. The group welcomes musicians of all instruments, though they are particularly in need of a tuba bassist and a drummer. While the orchestra once had a younger membership, the average age has steadily risen. Now, with all active players over 52, the group is eager to attract fresh talent. Basic musical skills and a passion for music are the only requirements for joining.
The Lohmühle Wind Orchestra continues to perform at festivals and celebrations across the region. To sustain its legacy, the group is actively seeking new members. With a welcoming atmosphere and a mix of musical styles, the orchestra offers both musical and social rewards for those who join.
