A 30-Minute Flight Where Monday Became Sunday Again

A short flight from Samoa to American Samoa turned into an unusual journey for passenger Noel Phillips. Boarding a rare Rockwell Turbo Commander, he crossed the International Date Line—only to find Monday suddenly became Sunday again. The trip also offered a glimpse into the remote US territory, where American influences blend with Pacific island life.

The flight was operated by Talofa Airways, a carrier known for using uncommon aircraft in commercial service. Phillips stepped onto a six-seat turboprop, a Rockwell Turbo Commander first built in the late 1970s. Though not a landmark in global aviation, this twin-engine plane played a key role in connecting remote South Pacific islands.

The journey lasted around 30 minutes, but it wasn't without drama. Mid-flight, a loud rattling noise raised alarms—later discovered to be a loose ceiling panel. Despite the scare, the plane safely completed the route, crossing the International Date Line in the process. On arrival, Phillips found American Samoa a place of contrasts. US dollars circulate freely, and military recruiting stations dot the landscape, reinforcing its ties to the mainland. Yet the territory's isolation drives up prices, with basic groceries like a bag of M&M's costing around $25. The mix of American familiarity and Pacific remoteness made the visit all the more intriguing.

The trip highlighted both the quirks of regional air travel and the unique character of American Samoa. A brief flight on an ageing turboprop revealed a territory where US culture meets the challenges of distance. For Phillips, the experience was as memorable for its oddities as for its destination.
