A 1920s Twist on Chasing Two Hares Closes Komediya Theater's Season
The Komediya Theater is closing its season with a lively musical farce, Chasing Two Hares. This fresh production reimagines a classic tale with a modern twist, blending humour, song, and a dash of 1920s charm. Director Anna Feketa has moved the story from Kyiv to Odessa, giving it an energetic new setting. The play centres on Pronya, a naive young woman whose journey from dreamer to grounded realist drives the plot. Her parents, Moisha Moiseyevich and Rosa Markovna, add to the chaos with their over-the-top efforts to secure her happiness, leading to a hilariously chaotic wedding scene. Amid the madness, the maid Khimka remains the only voice of reason.
The production stays true to the spirit of eccentric comedy, featuring exaggerated characters, quick-witted improvisation, and sharp humour. It is not a stage version of the Soviet film but an independent work with its own take on the ending. Familiar songs, including folk-inspired tunes like Bubliki and Vsyo chto bylo, are woven seamlessly into the story.
