"90s Sci-Fi Epic Misses Its Creator's Interest": Refers to a well-known science fiction series from the '90s, but its acclaimed director expresses disinterest in the project anymore.

In the world of science fiction, few properties have stood the test of time like Stargate. Originally premiering on television in 1997, the series Stargate SG-1, starring Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'Neill, captivated audiences for ten seasons. The franchise has since expanded beyond TV, with direct-to-video films, novels, comics, and a vibrant fan convention scene.

The journey began with the 1994 movie, which starred James Spader as Daniel Jackson and Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O'Neil. Roland Emmerich, director of the original film, has expressed no interest in returning to the franchise. Without Emmerich, a reboot or entirely new series for Stargate appears increasingly likely.

Amazon Studios has shown a keen interest in relaunching Stargate. In an interview in 2024, Brad Wright, franchise co-creator, revealed that Amazon considers Stargate one of its flagship franchises. Amazon, after acquiring MGM in 2023, is exploring ways to revive some of its most renowned titles, including Stargate.

The potential writers for Amazon's Stargate reboot are Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, known for their work on The Expanse. Their style leans toward a grounded, character-driven approach, which could breathe new life into the series. Separately, Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods are in final negotiations to write the first of a Stargate film trilogy under Roland Emmerich’s direction.

Despite Emmerich's stance effectively ruling out his return to Stargate, the unique blend of adventure, mystery, and speculative technology in Stargate still feels fresh decades later. The movie combined science fiction with ancient mythology and became a cult favorite, grossing nearly $200 million globally.

As the Stargate reboot takes shape, Brad Wright remains connected to the property but has not officially joined the writing team. Emmerich's current project, Those About to Die, a historical series set in ancient Rome, reflects his signature approach to large-scale, spectacle-driven storytelling.

In the midst of these developments, Amazon is also considering Robocop and Legally Blonde for relaunch, alongside Stargate. The potential writers for these projects, as well as the future of the Stargate reboot, are exciting prospects for fans of these iconic franchises. The potential for fresh storytelling while maintaining the essence of what made these properties great is a tantalizing prospect for the future.
