Usedom Beach will host the Baltic Lights sled dog race this weekend, featuring over 500 huskies and a mix of celebrity and professional mushers. Among the participants is 90-year-old actor Dieter Hallervorden, who will join the event's charity race on Saturday. The competition supports Welthungerhilfe (World Hunger Relief), with last year's edition raising €90,000 for global aid projects.
The event kicks off with a celebrity race at 12:00 PM on Saturday. Hallervorden, known for his long career in film and comedy, will ride in a sled but leave the steering to an experienced musher. He shares the lineup with other stars, including actress Simone Thomalla, actor Erol Sander, and Alec Völkel, frontman of the band BossHoss.
Beyond the celebrity spectacle, professional mushers will compete in separate races, guiding their husky teams across the sandy terrain. The Baltic Lights event has become a key fundraiser for Welthungerhilfe, directing donations to critical projects. Since 2021, it has contributed over €500,000 to initiatives in Syria (food distribution and rebuilding since 2022), Ethiopia (fighting famine from 2023 to 2025), and Haiti (water supply and farming programmes in 2024).
This year's race continues the tradition of blending sport with charity. Funds raised will again go toward Welthungerhilfe's work in crisis regions. Organisers hope to match or exceed last year's €90,000 donation, with public support and celebrity involvement driving the effort.
