(1) Israel-Hamas tensions intensify
The intense clashes between the Israeli army and Hamas in the Gaza Strip have escalated, as pressure mounts on Israel to agree to an arms truce. On Sunday, Israel announced that it had struck more than 250 Hamas targets within 24 hours. The Israeli military urged residents of the southern city of Khan Younis to evacuate the city before further attacks, but it was unclear how many people were aware of the order due to communication blackouts in large parts of the enclave.
Last week, the United States was criticized for vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Many believed that the US should have supported the resolution to help bring an end to the violence. Despite the criticism, the Biden administration has not backed down from its position, continuing to support Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Hamas.
This complex issue has many different perspectives, and the US must consider the facts on the ground, the history of the conflict, and the needs and concerns of all parties involved. The US must find a way forward that satisfies both Israel and its allies while maintaining its role as a global leader and a peacekeeper in the Middle East.
(2) Tennessee tornadoes and damage
Strong tornados and storms swept through Tennessee over the weekend, destroying hundreds of homes and killing at least six people. As of this morning, more than 34,000 people were without power in Tennessee, and many more were at risk of long-term power outages due to widespread damage. In Nashville, utility companies estimate that it could take days to restore power, while in Clarksville, near the border with Kentucky, it could take weeks to restore power after the tornado destroyed more than 90 buildings and made 270 homes "uninhabitable."
The same storm that caused the deadly tornadoes is expected to hit at least a dozen eastern US states with additional storms today.
(3) Trump trial resumes
Former US President Donald Trump is set to testify today in his civil trial for fraud in New York, but he surprised everyone by announcing last Sunday that he would not appear. The Republican nominee's decision not to testify is the latest attack on the civil fraud trial, which was launched by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. She is seeking $250 million in damages and a ban on Trump from conducting business in New York.
Trump participated in the trial last Thursday despite not being required to do so and took advantage of every opportunity to speak to the cameras during breaks. Political analysts argue that Trump's legal issues have become a key part of his political campaign and that his own massive legal problems may be one reason why voters want to see him re-elected.

(4) Antisemitism on college campuses
The president of the University of Pennsylvania, Liz Magill, resigned last Saturday over criticism of the university's response to rising antisemitism. Several incidents led to Magill's resignation, including the controversial guest list for a Palestinian literature festival hosted on campus.
The universities of Pennsylvania, Harvard, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have faced fierce opposition from prominent donors after their presidents made controversial statements on capitol hill, failing to condemn calls for genocide against Jews and denying that chromosomal sex cannot be changed.
Following Magill's resignation, Harvard's president, Claudine Gay, is now under scrutiny.
(5) Ukraine and US aid
President Joe Biden will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House this week as efforts to pass Ukrainian aid in Congress continue to stall. The Senate has been struggling to reach an agreement for weeks, with Republican leaders insisting that any aid package for Ukraine be tied to immigration and border security reforms.
Congressional leaders are now working to break the impasse, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell inviting Zelensky to address the entire Senate on Tuesday to plead for continued US support for Ukraine's defense against Russia.
