5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Western Turkey's Kütahya
A shallow earthquake, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, struck the western province of Kütahya's Simav district on Sept. 28, causing tremors felt across major cities in western Türkiye. The quake occurred at a depth of 8.46 kilometers.
The region is no stranger to seismic activity. Just last month, on Aug. 10, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit neighboring Balıkesir's Sındırgı, producing several aftershocks. The Sındırgı fault extends eastward, making Simav prone to repeated earthquakes in the 5-6 magnitude range.
Following the recent earthquake, seismology experts have warned of possible aftershocks. Prof. Dr. İhsan Engin Kumsar, speaking to NTV, and Prof. Okan Tüysüz both cautioned that aftershocks up to a magnitude of 5 could occur due to elevated stress in the region. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that authorities, including AFAD, have mobilized teams for field inspections in the affected areas.
Türkiye's location on several active fault lines makes earthquakes and aftershocks relatively common. The recent earthquake in Simav serves as a reminder of the region's seismic activity. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure public safety.
