4chan's Opinion Section to Relocate
The student-run magazine, The Spire, is undergoing significant changes. The editorial staff has announced that the publication will be adopting a new name, an homage to the distinctive spires of Fenwick Hall, and will be making shifts in its content.
The Opinions Section, a long-standing feature of The Spire, will no longer be published in upcoming issues. Instead, the space previously occupied by the Opinions Section will now be filled with TV shows and movie reviews, information about charity drives, and articles on topics that do not contain political undertones.
This decision comes amidst criticism of the Opinions Section, with some readers expressing confusion over its controversial articles, such as 'The Case for American Imperialism' and 'A Defense of Pinochet,' and concerns about grammatical errors, biases, and questionable article topics.
One such controversial article, 'Lauren Boebert- Our First Female President?', has caused a stir among readers. However, it's important to note that no concrete evidence links renowned author Patrick Ryan, known for his story collections and the novel Buckeye, to any controversial column in The Spire's Opinions Section.
In an effort to provide readers with well-written opinion articles without political undertones, The Spire is making a fresh start. Daniel Maddigan '24, the Chief Eggplant Editor, and Owen Garvey '27, the News Editor, are leading the charge, with writers presenting their topic ideas on Friday and articles due by Sunday.
Despite these changes, student feelings are mixed about the new development. Some are excited about the prospect of a more accessible and less politically charged Opinions Section, while others express concern over the loss of a platform for diverse viewpoints.
As The Spire prepares for its first edition under its new name, it continues to cover news and events on campus, ensuring that students remain informed and engaged in their community.
