49ers sign Christian Kirk to bolster revamped receiver corps

The San Francisco 49ers have strengthened their receiving unit by signing veteran wideout Christian Kirk. The one-year, £6 million deal follows the team's earlier acquisition of Mike Evans this offseason. Kirk's arrival adds experience to a group set to feature Evans, Ricky Pearsall, and himself as starters.

The move comes as the 49ers prepare to part ways with former top receiver Brandon Aiyuk, reshaping their offensive options for the coming season.

Kirk entered the league in 2018 after being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals. His career gained momentum during a standout spell with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he set personal bests in receptions, yards, and touchdowns during his first season with the team. A later move to the Houston Texans saw further growth, particularly in 2025.

That year, Kirk delivered key performances, including multiple touchdowns and crucial third-down catches from quarterback C.J. Stroud. Highlights included a 45-yard play in a Thanksgiving victory over Dallas, where he contributed to a 31-point haul. His deep-threat ability and clutch plays in high-pressure moments became defining traits. Injuries have disrupted Kirk's recent seasons, with 18 missed games over the past three years. Yet, his playoff form in 2025—featuring two touchdown receptions—demonstrated resilience and big-game capability. The 49ers' decision to sign him reflects confidence in his proven production, despite the injury history. The deal was first reported by *The Schultz Report* and later confirmed by a source close to the negotiations. Kirk now joins a revamped receiver room, where he is expected to line up alongside Evans and Pearsall as the team's primary trio.

Kirk's one-year contract brings a mix of experience and playmaking to San Francisco's offence. His deep-ball skills and red-zone reliability will be tested as the 49ers adjust to life without Aiyuk. The signing also marks the second veteran receiver added this offseason, signalling a clear shift in the team's passing strategy.
