A fateful oversight on the A5: a truck-driven chaos

The driver in question was steering his long-haul truck along the A5 Frankfurt-Gießen around 12:15 PM on a Thursday. As he aimed to transition from the right-hand lane into the middle lane, just after the Bad Homburg intersection, he didn't spot a tiny VW Lupo in his blind spot. A heart-pounding swerve saved him from colliding, but this simple error ignited a chain reaction.
The nervous Lupo driver lost control and veered into the left lane, colliding with the central crash barrier. An Opel driver swerved to avoid the chaos, but collided with the careless truck, sending it crashing down the embankment.
Although only minor injuries were sustained, the unexpected catastrophe had severe consequences: the critical north-south artery remained closed until 2 PM, permitting just one lane of traffic afterwards.
Regrettably, the event's impact did not wane: a warning strike on the railroads resulted in a sizable quantity of commuters opting to travel by car. By nightfall, congestion backed up as far as Zeppelinheim at Frankfurt Airport, almost 30 kilometers away, on the A 661, and as far as Frankfurt-Dornbusch.
To complicate matters further, it took a crane to recover the wayward truck, leaking diesel fuel and necessitating the removal of soil from the damaged area. The A5 was only fully reopened at 5 AM on Friday, just in time for the morning commute rush.
