24-Ton Salmon Spill Shuts Down German Highway After Truck Crash
A truck carrying 24 tons of deep-frozen salmon overturned on the A93 motorway on Friday evening. The crash happened between Luhe-Wildenau and Wernberg-Köblitz, forcing a lengthy closure of the highway. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to clear the scattered salmon and secure the area.
The accident began when the truck skidded on snow-covered roads and flipped onto its side. A car travelling behind collided with the rear of the overturned vehicle, though its driver walked away uninjured. The truck driver suffered only minor injuries.
Around 70 emergency responders, including firefighters and THW volunteers, worked to remove the salmon and reopen the road. Authorities warned drivers to adjust their speed for winter conditions. The A93 remained closed for several hours before finally reopening at around 10:10 p.m. Preliminary reports estimate the property damage will exceed six figures. The truck driver’s identity has not been released to the public.
The incident caused major disruption on the A93, with crews taking hours to clear the salmon and debris. The highway has since reopened, but authorities continue to urge caution on icy roads. The financial impact of the crash remains under assessment.
