20th annual Melnyk Skate for Kids a success

The 20th annual Melnyk Skate for Kids brought festive cheer to young skaters on December 17 at Canadian Tire Centre. Started in 2005 by former Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, the event now runs under the leadership of his daughters, Olivia and Anna. This year, around 80 children from three local schools received brand-new skating gear.

The tradition began two decades ago as a way to give back to the community. Since then, it has grown into a much-loved holiday event for families and players alike. Each child who attends gets a free set of skates, a helmet, and a practice jersey, all provided by the Senators and the Melnyk family.

Over the years, more Ottawa Senators players have joined in, spending time on the ice with the kids. Anna Melnyk noted how participation from the team has steadily increased, making the event even more special. Sparty, the Senators’ mascot, has also become a regular highlight, with Olivia Melnyk mentioning how much the children adore interacting with him. The atmosphere remains lively and joyful, offering a fun break before the holidays. Organisers and players alike take pride in seeing the excitement on the children’s faces as they try out their new equipment.

The event continues to thrive as a community staple, offering both practical support and festive fun. With new gear and memorable interactions with players and Sparty, the children leave with smiles—and often, a new love for skating. The Melnyk sisters and the Senators organisation have already begun planning for next year’s edition.
