Revved Up for F1: Thailand's Pursuit of the 2028 Grand Prix

Thailand is cooking up a storm, readying to take its place on the world stage as a host for the Formula 1 (F1) Grand Prix! Set for 2028, the race is poised to be a thrilling addition to the vibrant capital city of Bangkok. The Tourism and Sports Minister, Sorawong Thienthong, shared the exciting news on Friday, revealing that a proposal and budget will be submitted to the Cabinet next week.

The limelight shines on Thailand once more, thanks to the Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who recently chatted with Stefano Domenicali, President of Formula 1, in Monaco. This meeting paved the way for preliminary Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to be signed, as the two discuss the feasibility of F1 in the Land of Smiles. Sorawong has been on a mission, keeping a close eye on the project and engaging with major private sponsors eager to back the event in Thailand.

Choosing the ideal track is crucial, and the ministry is considering several street circuit routes in central Bangkok. They'll be conducting further feasibility studies to ensure the first year of hosting is a rousing success, generating substantial returns both directly and indirectly.

With a packed schedule, F1's current calendar includes 24 races worldwide. However, Thailand has strong competition, including four races in the Asia-Pacific region, such as Singapore in Southeast Asia. Yet, with Thailand's experience hosting MotoGP at the FIA-accredited Chang International Circuit in Buriram, the racetrack gods might just be smiling upon the Thai bid.

Stay tuned, as Thailand's road to the 2028 F1 Grand Prix is just getting started! The route, contract length, and sustainability initiatives are set to be revealed after the June 4 cabinet meeting.
