Considering a Return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP): A Suggestion for Peter Obi Ahead of the 2027 Presidential Election
2027 Presidential Election Prediction: "I'd Rejoin PDP if I Were Peter Obi," Says Sowunmi
In a casual chat on the 'Mic On podcast' hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, PDP stalwart Segun Sowunmi voice his opinion that Peter Obi, the previous Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, might want to consider a return to the PDP for the 2027 presidential race to amplify his political odds.
Sowunmi argued that Obi, a plausible contender for the upcoming election, may need a more robust platform to contest on in 2027, saying, "By 2027, the PDP of Nigeria will be making its processes clear and announcing when forms are available, and anyone confident enough to run should step forward and do so."
He further emphasized that if Obi rejoins the PDP, he could present a powerful case for the party's presidential ticket, "Given that the PDP was originally conceived by southern leaders such as the late Alex Ekwueme, if I were Peter Obi, I would return to the PDP and make a strong case for the presidential ticket."
Sowunmi also highlighted Obi's impressive showing in the 2023 elections where he earned over six million votes without the backing of governors or significant political figures, demonstrating his potential. He insinuated that with the support of 12 governors and the PDP's strong grassroots infrastructure, Obi's chances would radically improve.
He forecasted, "We've covered every region, but we have not reached the South East yet. However, Obi is free to make his own decisions. If his numbers and the animated energy that follows him were to transfer to the PDP, and he is the presidential candidate, I can assure you he would take the South East, South South, Christian North, and the North Central."

In the realm of Nigerian politics, Segun Sowunmi advocates for Peter Obi's return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 presidential election, citing a more robust platform as a key factor. Sowunmi points out that by 2027, the PDP will announced their processes for the election, encouraging viable candidates to step forward.
He emphasizes that Obi, with his impressive showing in the 2023 elections, could present a powerful case for the PDP's presidential ticket, given the party's roots in southern leadership. Sowunmi believes that with the support of 12 governors and the PDP's strong grassroots infrastructure, Obi's chances would significantly improve.
In a potential scenario, Obi's transfer to the PDP and subsequent victory could see him taking the South East, South South, Christian North, and the North Central regions. Meanwhile, tensions persist within the PDP, with instances such as Gov Namadi tearing PDP membership cards and claims that the party is almost non-existent, creating a dramatic twist.
The PDP also demonstrates its fierce commitment to party loyalty, asserting that anyone attempting to sell their party will suffer. Amidst this, the PDP in Abia declares its readiness to reclaim power in 2027, vowing for a comeback. Rhodes-Vivour, a candidate, voices his opposition to any coalition with the APC, highlighting political alignments.
In a separate context, Peter Obi pays tribute to Pope Francis as a moral compass in a troubled world. The PDP Chairman in Rivers, however, alleges that the APC is funding Wike with the intent to bring down the PDP, adding more fuel to the fire of political motives in the opposition ranks. Politics and general news continue to unfold in Naija, as the 2027 election draws closer.
