2026 World Cup welcomes Iraq, Congo after decades-long absences

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature several long-awaited returns, with teams securing their spots in dramatic fashion. Iraq and Congo both ended decades-long absences, while Italy failed to qualify for a third straight tournament. The group stage also sets up key clashes, including the U.S. facing Turkey and Paraguay. Iraq booked its first World Cup appearance since 1986 after a tense victory over Bolivia in the final qualifier. The win ended a 38-year wait for the nation, which last competed in Mexico's 1986 tournament.

Congo also celebrated a historic return, qualifying for the first time since 1974. A 100th-minute goal against Jamaica sealed their place, sparking wild celebrations. Elsewhere, Czechia secured qualification for the first time since 2006, edging past Denmark in a penalty shootout. Sweden followed with an 88th-minute winner against Poland, ensuring their spot in the tournament. Bosnia and Herzegovina advanced at Italy's expense, leaving the four-time champions out of the World Cup for the third consecutive time. Turkey, ranked 22nd in the world, will now face the U.S. in Group D on June 25 in Inglewood, California. The U.S. men's team will also play Paraguay on June 12 and Australia on June 19 in the group stage. Their matches against Turkey and Paraguay promise tough competition, given Turkey's strong ranking and Paraguay's experience.

The 2026 World Cup will see at least six teams returning after absences of 10 years or more. Iraq, Congo, Czechia, and Sweden all ended long waits, while Bosnia and Herzegovina progressed at Italy's expense. The U.S. now prepares for a challenging group stage, with Turkey and Paraguay standing in their way.
