French Cyclist Maëva Squiban Makes History with Two Consecutive Tour de France Femmes Stage Wins
Maëva Squiban, a 23-year-old French professional cyclist, has made history by becoming the first French cyclist to win multiple stages in the Tour de France Femmes. This remarkable achievement was accomplished in the 2025 edition of the race.
On Thursday, Squiban clinched her first victory in Ambert, followed by another triumph on Friday, starting her breakaway from Bourg-en-Bresse. In the ascend to the col du Granier, she led solo, with no competitor within a hundred meters of her rear wheel.
During the descent leading to Chambéry, Squiban reached speeds over 80 km/h, securing another victory. The breakaway built up a significant lead on the peloton, exceeding five minutes when the road began to rise.
Squiban's victory came after a challenging journey. In 2022, her first Tour de France ended in the hospital after a crash during the second stage. She also suffered a sacrum fracture in the same year. However, a car accident during a training ride in May could have prevented her from participating in the 2025 Tour de France. Thankfully, her helmet saved her life during the accident, and she was able to recover in time for the race.
Squiban's teammates, UAE Team ADQ, were overjoyed with her success. They popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate her victory, and her teammate, who was not selected for the Tour, hugged her in tears after her Thursday victory, exclaiming, "Do you realize? A stage of the Tour de France?" On Friday, it was her father who questioned her, just as incredulous.
Squiban's social media was flooded with photos and videos of her victory after winning a stage of the Tour de France. Her compatriot Cédrine Kerbaol crossed the finish line with nearly a minute's lead over her.
In the breakaway, Squiban was more powerful, fresher, and stronger than her fellow escapees, including Marie Le Net, the French champion, and Lotte Kopecky, double world champion. Despite this, Squiban finished the second-to-last stage in tears in 2024, coming in second at the finish line.
Despite the setbacks, Squiban's future prospects in women's professional cycling are very strong. She has demonstrated the capability to compete and win at the highest level, signaling potential for overall race victories and a prominent role in the sport in coming years.
