Rocking the Card Tables: Joao Vieira's Poker Tournament Strategy Revealed
"2025 Poker Ambitions Unveiled: Joao Vieira's Grand Blueprint"
With three WSOP bracelets and a lofty spot on the Portuguese all-time money list, Joao Vieira is a force to be reckoned with in the world of high-stakes poker. Currently tearing it up at the PokerStars European Poker Tour Monte Carlo festival, Vieira's not resting on his laurels—he's hungry for more.
Find out what it takes to maintain peak performance in a grueling tournament schedule, as Vieira dishes on his pre-game rituals, balancing online and live play, and his quest for more live championships.
Getting Game-Ready for the Big Leagues
As we creep into spring 2025, Vieira divulges that his year begins slowly, taking January off to soak up the holiday vibes and recharge. By February, he gears up for the big events on his radar: the EPT Monte Carlo, Triton Poker Series showdowns, and, of course, the World Series of Poker.

"I come from a sporting background, with basketball, where you plan your peaks throughout the season," he explains. "In March, I was at Triton, so in April, I tried hard not to fly. I focused more on online play, polishing things up a bit to get ready for 80 days of non-stop live tournaments that I’m playing.”
By gently ramping up his game time, Vieira can conquer the long grind of the poker circuit without succumbing to burnout.
Powering Through the Marathon
The key to success in live tournaments? Breaks. Lots of breaks.

"Poker tournaments can feel endless, so you've just got to take things one day at a time," says Vieira. "Taking a few extra rest days can make all the difference."
This strategy means skipping less enjoyable events and tournaments, so that he can save his energy for the main events.
"You want to be fresh whenever you have a chance," says Vieira. "So if you make a deep run and find yourself on Day 2 or Day 3, you want to be completely fresh."
Live vs. Online: Finding the Right Mix
Despite his impressive online tournament record, with 19 titles under his belt across SCOOP and WCOOP events, Vieira has bigger ambitions for his live success.
"I've had my share of online success," he admits. "I just want to replicate that in live events. I feel like things are starting to ramp up, and hopefully in a few years, I'll be showing off a room full of live poker trophies!”
Vieira plans to cut back on online play and focus more on trading felts for real ones in the hopes of leaving an indelible mark on the live tournament scene.
