2025 MLB Rankings, Edition 8: Teams Respond to Personal Slights in Standings Ranking
Baseball's 2025 MLB season is heating up as they move into the second month. Now that the weather's warming up, the best teams are stepping up their game and shaking off the pack, while the worst teams are struggling even more. Here are the updated rankings as the Dodgers regain their top spot:
#1: Los Angeles Dodgers (+1)
After a one-week hiatus, the Dodgers have roared their way back to the top of our MLB Power Rankings. They've won seven straight games to end last week and start this one, except for a Sunday loss to the Braves. Freddie Freeman's impressive start to the season was cut short by a couple of IL stints, but he's still compiled 21 RBIs and a 1.057 OPS through 23 games. Michael Jordan would be proud of the way the Dodgers took their fall personally and responded with dominance. Their road trip takes them to Miami and Arizona this week.
#2: New York Mets (-1)
The Mets had a short-lived stay at the top of the power rankings following their series win against the Nationals. However, the rest of the week didn't treat them as well, as they lost a three-game set at home to the Diamondbacks and another on the road to the Cardinals. Juan Soto hit his first two homers at Citi Field as a Met and, hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. The Mets' road trip continues with three more games against the D-backs before hosting the Cubs for the weekend.
#3: Chicago Cubs (-)
The Cubs won both of their series last week, first against the Pirates and then against the Brewers. They now have a three-game lead in the National League Central. The outfielders have been on fire for Chicago, with Pete Crow-Armstrong turning in a fantastic first half with 26 RBIs and an .867 OPS, earning a 2.0 bWAR. The Cubs put their hot start on the line at home against the Giants and on the road against the Mets this week.
#4: San Diego Padres (+1)
The Padres have racked up another perfect week, earning a spot bump in the power rankings. They struggled a bit in their games against the Giants but managed to sweep the Pirates and avoid Paul Skenes, securing a 6-0 record for the week. Fernando Tatis Jr has been tearing it up offensively and defensively, leading the NL with a 2.4 bWAR. Most of this has been achieved without Jackson Merrill, who made his first rehab start over the weekend.
#5: Philadelphia Phillies (-1)
The Phillies were able to get back on track this week by taking series from the D-backs and Nationals. They only slip one spot in the power rankings due to the Padres' consistent excellence throughout the season. The Phillies' hot streak should continue as they head out on the road against the Rays and Guardians this week.
#6: San Francisco Giants (+2)
Although they dropped a series to the Padres at home, the Giants manage to move up two spots in the power rankings. Their biggest weakness so far has been Willy Adames and Matt Chapman's struggles at the plate, but they've been excellent on the mound. Logan Webb and Robbie Ray have both been fantastic thus far, while the Giants take on the Cubs and Twins on the road this week.
#7: New York Yankees (-1)
The Yankees had a rough week, losing both series they played against the Athletics and Red Sox. Concerns are growing in the Bronx as Warren and Carlos Carrasco have been less than impressive as the fourth and fifth starters. The injury to Luis Gil has left a gaping hole in the rotation, but the good news is Aaron Judge's Legendary April continued with 10 long balls and already a May homer under his belt. The Dodgers will visit for three games at home before the Yankees head to Sacramento.
#8: Texas Rangers (-1)
The Rangers had a tough week, going 2-5 and slipping in the power rankings. They dropped series to the Athletics and Mariners, making their path to an AL West title even more challenging. Corey Seager's return from the IL could be the spark they need to turn things around. They have a road trip scheduled against the Red Sox and Tigers this week.
#9: Arizona Diamondbacks (+1)
The D-backs got Ketel Marte back from injury this week and took series from the Mets and Phillies. They've stopped their slide down the power rankings and are back in the ninth spot. Their pitching has been a concern, particularly Brandon Pfaadt, but great starts from Zac Gallen and Corbin Burnes are promising signs for the future. The Mets come to town for four games, followed by a showdown against the Dodgers for the weekend.
#10: Detroit Tigers (+1)
The Tigers jump into the top-10 of the power rankings after dominating the Angels this week to maintain the top record in the AL. Their pitching has been magnificent, with Casey Mize, Jack Flaherty, and Tarik Skubal all shining in the rotation. Riley Greene has also been fantastic at the plate, while Spencer Torkelson finally arrived, and centerfielder Javier Baez has been a difference-maker. The Rockies and Rangers will square off against the Tigers this week.
#11: Atlanta Braves (-)
The Braves are still fighting their way back after a slow start, sitting at 15-11. They've managed to stay afloat, thanks to the return of Alex Verdugo from the minors following Jurickson Profar's suspension. In 13 games, Verdugo has posted a .304 batting average. Austin Riley also hit two homers in their Sunday win over the Dodgers to salvage the week for the Braves. They have a four-game set at home against the Reds, followed by a three-game road trip against the Pirates.
#12: Houston Astros (-3)
The Astros find themselves taking a hit in the power rankings due to the rise of teams like the Tigers and the struggles they've experienced against teams like the White Sox. Their ace, Framber Valdez, struggled in Game 1, while Hunter Brown gave them hope for the future with a great outing in Game 3. Things aren't going well in Houston, and the Astros will need to turn things around if they want to compete with teams like the Tigers. They'll look to do so against the Brewers and Reds this week.
#13: Seattle Mariners (+2)
The Mariners have the best record in the AL West but are still trailing their divisional rivals in the power rankings. They're getting impressive performances from unlikely sources, like Jorge Polanco's .380 batting average and Dylan Moore's 166 OPS+. Their pitching hasn't been dominant, but they've shown they have what it takes to compete. They'll need to keep it up if they want to jump Houston in the rankings. They've got a road trip ahead of them this week, with stops in Sacramento and Seattle against the Blue Jays.
#14: Cleveland Guardians (-1)
The Guardians are taking a step back this week, dropping one spot in the power rankings due to the Mariners' continued strong play. They had a solid 5-2 week, beating the Twins at home and the Blue Jays on the road. The Guardians have been excellent in one-run games, going 8-1, but struggled in games decided by 5+ runs. Expect them to be competitive as they host the Phillies before heading out on a road trip against the Nationals.
#15: Kansas City Royals (+2)
The Royals are climbing up the power rankings after a strong 5-1 week against the Rays and Orioles. Bobby Witt's 22-game hit streak came to an end on Friday but was quickly snapped with a two-hit game featuring a homer and an RBI on Sunday. Kris Bubic had another great outing on Saturday, bringing his ERA down to a stellar 1.98. The Royals have a big week ahead, with matchups against the White Sox and Red Sox at home.
#16: Boston Red Sox (-2)
The Red Sox are struggling to find consistency, dropping two spots in the power rankings following a 2-4 week. Although Alex Bregman and Kristian Campbell have earned the affection of Red Sox fans, Rafael Devers is continuing to struggle. Sitting at a subpar .250 batting average with strikeout leaders league-wide, the Red Sox need Devers to step up if they want to make a run. They've got a home series against the Rangers before heading to Kansas City to face the Royals.
#17: Milwaukee Brewers (-1)
Despite winning two out of three against the White Sox, the Brewers made a step back in the power rankings following a tough series against the Cubs. The team couldn't keep up with the wily pitching of the Cubs, ultimately ending the series with a 10-0 loss. The Brewers will look to rebound against the Astros at home before hitting the road for a series against the Rays.
#18: Toronto Blue Jays (-)
The Blue Jays held their ground in the power rankings despite a 3-3 week. They dropped two games to the Guardians but managed to split the series with the Red Sox. The good news for the Jays came on Saturday in their loss to the Guardians, as Kevin Gausman turned in a solid outing after a dismal performance against the Yankees. The Blue Jays expect great things from ace pitcher Kevin Gausman, and this performance is a step in the right direction. They'll take on the Angels and Mariners this week.
#19: Oakland Athletics (+2)
The Athletics are making a move up the power rankings after a strong week. They sit at 19-16, proving they're a legitimate threat in the AL West. Luis Severino and JP Sears have been impressive on the mound, which will be key as they take on the Mariners and Yankees at home this week.
#20: Cincinnati Reds (-1)
The Reds lose a spot in the power rankings after a 2-3 week, thanks to losses against the Cardinals and Nationals. Elly De La Cruz and Hunter Greene continue to shine, but the Reds need more production from their hitters if they want to climb back up the rankings. They'll look to get back on track against the Pirates and Braves this week.
#21: Baltimore Orioles (-1)
The Orioles have dropped back a spot after a disappointing week following a series loss to the Royals. Kyle Gibson struggled in his start against the Yankees, and the team's offense is still scoring runs consistently. If the Orioles want to climb back up the rankings, they'll need better performances from their pitching staff. They've got a road trip planned against the Twins and Angels this week.
#22: St. Louis Cardinals (-)
The Cardinals stayed put in the power rankings, winning two out of three against the Reds and Nationals. Nolan Arenado and Yadier Molina have been fantastic for the team, but they'll need more consistent performances from their hitters to move up the rankings. They'll take on the Pirates at home and travel to Washington for the weekend.
#23: Washington Nationals (-)
The Nationals managed a 3-4 week, with losses to both the Reds and Cardinals. Although they experienced some growing pains, MacKenzie Gore and CJ Abrams have shown promise for the future. The Nationals will need a consistent offensive threat to emerge as they take on the Guardians and Cardinals this week.
#24: Minnesota Twins (+1)
The Twins move up a spot despite a 3-3 week, thanks to a solid 2-1 record against the Red Sox. Kody Clemens hit his first homer at Fenway Park in front of his dad, Roger, providing a memorable highlight for the Twins. The Twins will need to continue their solid play as they take on the Orioles and Giants this week.
#25: Tampa Bay Rays (-1)
The Rays struggled against the Yankees, falling a spot in the power rankings. Although their offense has been inconsistent, Max Fried has been tough to hit. The Rays will need more from their bats if they want to climb up the rankings, and they'll look to do so against the Blue Jays and Orioles this week.
#26: Los Angeles Angels (-)
The Angels had a rough week, going 1-5 and falling out of the Wild Card race. With Mike Trout on the shelf with a knee injury, the Angels were struggling at the dish. If they want to get back in the hunt, they'll need better performances from their hitters. They've got a home series against the Blue Jays and Orioles to try and right the ship.
#27: Pittsburgh Pirates (-)
The Pirates endured a difficult week, going 1-5 and sitting near the bottom of the power rankings. Paul Skenes had a rough start against the Padres, and the team's offense struggled to put runs on the board. They'll look to get back on track against the Reds and Braves this week.
#28: Miami Marlins (-)
The Marlins had a tough week, going 1-5 and struggling to find consistency. They've dropped down to the last spot in the power rankings, but their offense has shown flashes of potential. They'll look to build off of those moments and get back in the win column when they take on the Dodgers at home before traveling to Chicago to face the White Sox.
#29: Chicago White Sox (-)
The White Sox had a tough week, going 1-5 and watching their rotation struggle against the Astros and the Cubs. With Luis Robert Jr. and Eloy Jimenez sidelined, the team will need to find ways to generate runs if they want to turn things around. They'll look to do so against the Royals before heading to Miami for a series against the Marlins.
#30: Colorado Rockies (-)
The Rockies had a difficult week, going 1-5 and continuing their struggles on the mound. German Marquez, the team's ace, has struggled so far, posting a 9.90 ERA. If the Rockies want to find success, they'll need to make improvements on the mound. They'll look to do so against the Tigers and Padres at home this week.
