2025 Asia Cup Preview: Sanju Samson Constructs Ideal Batsman by Blending Attributes from Fellow Players
Sanju Samson, India's wicketkeeper-batter, recently shared his vision of the 'perfect batter' in a video posted by Sony Sports Network. The video, which was also shared by the Asia Cup broadcasters in India, has generated a lot of buzz in the cricketing world.
In the video, Samson discussed various aspects of batting, highlighting different players he believes excel in each area. For shot range, Samson named Suryakumar Yadav, calling him the best in 360-degree stroke play. Yadav, who has been in exceptional form lately, hit three centuries and a fifty last year against Bangladesh and South Africa.
Regarding elegance, Samson picked vice-captain Shubman Gill. Gill's graceful batting style and consistent performances have made him a fan favourite. Samson also praised opener Abhishek Sharma for his bat swing and backed himself for power-hitting.
However, when it came to the art of defense, Samson expressed concern that it is fading in the modern game. He stated, 'I do not see anyone defending nowadays. No one is doing it. Everyone is standing and hitting sixes.' Interestingly, Samson did not mention a specific player for the 'defence' skill in his 'perfect batter.'
In an unusual move, Samson picked Jasprit Bumrah for 'defence.' Bumrah, known for his precision and economy with the ball, showed his versatility by being chosen for this batting attribute.
Samson also singled out head coach Gautam Gambhir as the ideal clutch performer. Gambhir, a former Indian cricketer, is known for his ability to deliver under pressure, making him a perfect choice for this role.
For 'swagger,' Samson picked all-rounder Hardik Pandya, praising his confidence and six-hitting ability. However, there have been rumours about a possible separation between Pandya and his wife Natasa Stankovic.
As for Samson's own performance, he struggled in England, managing only 51 runs across five innings. But he revived his T20I career last year as an opener, scoring 487 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 171.47. With India already through to the Super Four, their match against Oman on September 19 could offer him game time.
The ongoing Asia Cup 2025 has been marred by a handshake row between India and Pakistan. There is a possibility of Richie Richardson replacing Andy Pycroft after the handshake row.
Samson has not yet batted in the ongoing Asia Cup. Nevertheless, his insights into the 'perfect batter' have sparked intrigue and debate among cricket enthusiasts. An article titled 'Asia Cup 2025: Sitanshu Kotak says Sanju Samson ready to bat anywhere for India' further discusses Samson's readiness to contribute to the team in any role.
