2025 MLB Season: New York Teams Compete in Playoff Races

As the 2025 Major League Baseball season approaches its midpoint, both New York teams are making a strong push for playoff contention.

The New York Mets are currently holding a record of around 64-55, placing them as competitive contenders in the National League East. The team has a solid home record of 38-21, but struggles more on the road with a record of 25-34. They rank solidly in key pitching stats, including ERA (3.70, 7th in MLB) and overall pitching performance. Pete Alonso recently became the Mets' all-time home run leader with his 253rd homer, highlighting their offensive strength.

However, the Mets' journey to the playoffs has not been without setbacks. In 2023, they experienced a disappointing season, finishing with only 75 wins and missing the playoffs.

On the other hand, the New York Yankees are currently sitting in the American League East with a record near 64-56, trailing division leaders Toronto and Boston. They are about 6 games behind the division leader, showing a competitive but slightly trailing position in the stretch run of the season. The Yankees are in third place in the AL East, indicating playoff contention but needing to make up ground.

The Yankees made significant steps to increase their odds in October, acquiring 25-year-old outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres in the offseason and signing veteran Marcus Stroman to a multi-year deal. However, they face some looming questions, particularly with Kodai Senga, one of their formidable starters, set to start the 2024 season injured.

In contrast, the AL Central, NL West, and NL East are each set up to be one-sided affairs, with the Twins, Dodgers, and Braves expected to run away with each division respectively. The Dodgers, for instance, boast a super-team featuring Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Shohei Ohtani, Gavin Lux, James Outman, Will Smith, Teoscar Hernandez, Max Muncy, and Chris Taylor. Their rotation is headed by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, and Tyler Glasnow.

Despite the favourites, the beauty of baseball is that we never know what can happen, and an underdog team could make a run late and shock the baseball world. So, as the 2025 season unfolds, keep an eye on the Mets and Yankees as they strive for playoff glory.

The New York Mets have managed to capture the spotlight in the 2025 MLB season, with their historic home run milestones, as Pete Alonso became the all-time home run leader for the team. In spite of a disappointing 2023 season, history seems to be repeating itself as they are playing competitively, holding a record of around 64-55 in the National League East. The New York Yankees, while trailing the division leaders, are also in playoff contention, having made strategic moves in the offseason, such as acquiring Juan Soto and signing Marcus Stroman, to boost their chances in October. With the AL East being a tight race, the Yankees, like their cross-town rivals, are determined to secure a spot under the playoff spotlight in the 2025 season.
