2018 World Circular Economy Forum Summary Report
In a world grappling with pressing global challenges such as climate change, pollution, and unemployment, it has become increasingly clear that a change in the economic model is necessary. Public policy makers and business leaders are being called upon to lead the world away from the linear economic model and towards a more sustainable and regenerative approach: the circular economy.
The linear economic model, characterised by a one-way flow of resources from extraction to production, use, and disposal, has proven to be detrimental to our planet. It is time for stronger leadership and international cooperation to address these issues and pave the way for a more resilient and equitable future.
One such call to action came from the World Circular Economy Forum 2018 IISD report, which is available for download in English and Japanese. The report outlines solutions that enable the transition to a circular economy, a model that improves business, trade, and job creation by removing barriers and promoting collaboration and the free exchange of goods, services, and ideas.
The circular economy encourages the reuse, repair, and recycling of resources, ensuring that waste is minimised and that the value of products is maximised. In 2019, Japan, as the G20 presidency holder, and Romania, as the EU Council presidency holder, took the lead in promoting circular economy solutions and environmental protection. Through initiatives focusing on innovation, resource efficiency, and global cooperation to combat climate change, they demonstrated the potential for a sustainable and prosperous future.
As the world continues to grapple with the consequences of the linear economic model, it is essential that solutions that enable the circular economy are allowed to spread freely around the globe. By working together, we can create a more sustainable and equitable world for all.
If you are interested in learning more about the circular economy and the initiatives being taken to promote it, we encourage you to download the World Circular Economy Forum 2018 IISD report. Together, we can shape a brighter and more sustainable future for generations to come.
