Young Guy Takes Drunken Joyride in Bielefeld with Excavator, Leaves Damage in His Wake
In an unexpected and costly turn of events early Tuesday morning, a 20-year-old from Bad Oeynhausen decided to take his company's subcontractor's excavator for a spin—while under the influence. The joyride through Bielefeld resulted in him damaging a parked car and facing the consequences of his actions.
According to police reports, the man's reckless driving led him to collide with the parked vehicle. However, instead of stopping, he continued his path. Officers were alerted to the situation and encountered the young man as he was pulling over. The 20-year-old confessed to wanting a thrill with the excavator, as he did not have the necessary license to operate it.
The incident landed him in hot water, as the crash left the car with approximately €2,000 worth of damage. The 20-year-old was taken in for a blood test and questioned at the police station.
In Germany, heavy machinery drivers, including professional drivers and those operating passenger transport vehicles, are held to a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding alcohol consumption. Penalties for exceeding limits can result in significant fines and license suspensions. Repeat offenders face increased fines, community service, and tougher reinstatement requirements from the local administrative office for driving licenses. In particular cases, alcohol interlock devices may be required, and driving without an interlock can result in imprisonment.
Although the young man claimed he was only looking for some fun, his actions led to unintended consequences and a hefty bill.
