1970s Southern California's laid-back vibe encapsulated in a Porsche surfboard partnership
Porsche and Almond Surfboards have teamed up to release a limited-edition surfboard collection, marking the second instalment of their "Single Fins & Air-Cooled Engines" series. This collaboration pays homage to the distinctive design of the 1972 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, with a 6-foot swallowtail surfboard at the heart of the collection.
The surfboard, handmade in California, boasts a fuller outline and narrow tail, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. Each board is offered in Grand Prix White with accents of blue, red, or green, mirroring the vibrant colours of the original 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7. A total of 72 surfboards are produced, reflecting the year the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was first introduced.
The collection extends beyond the surfboard, with an accompanying California-inspired apparel and accessories capsule. The capsule embodies Southern California surf culture and Porsche performance, featuring T-shirts, caps, a sweatshirt, a beach towel, boardshorts, a canvas tote, handmade surf flags, a sticker set, a woven patch, a model car, and a California Surf Guide.
The surfboard and apparel can be purchased on porsche.com and almondsurfboards.com. Dave Allee, founder of Almond Surfboards, commented on the collection's inspiration, stating that it captures the essence of both the legendary sports car and the spirit of surf culture.
Porsche's Heritage Design strategy has seen it evoke its icons from decades past, including the recent Porsche 911 Spirit 70. The brand's first introduction of the 911 RS 2.7 gained popularity and became associated with surfing, with the image of a surfboard on the roof of a 911 RS 2.7 being a recognised symbol of a retro beach lifestyle.
In addition to the traditional surfboard, an all-electric surfboard option, the Lind Canvas, is available. However, further details about this option were not provided in this article. The Porsche x Almond surfboard retails for $3,000, and apparel prices range from $45 to $155.
This collaboration not only appeals to surfing enthusiasts and Porsche fans but also to design aficionados, capturing the essence of both the legendary sports car and the spirit of surf culture. Porsche has a longstanding connection with Southern California, making this collaboration a perfect fit for both brands.
The surfboard in the collection, with its fuller outline and narrow tail, blends a vibrant sports performance with an appealing lifestyle aesthetic. This limited-edition surfboard collection, featuring the all-electric Lind Canvas option, extends beyond the surfboard to include California-inspired apparel and accessories, embodying Southern California surf culture and Porsche performance.
