18-year-old Anton Frondell makes NHL debut with Blackhawks on road trip

The Chicago Blackhawks have called up 18-year-old forward Anton Frondell for his NHL debut. The young Swede took to the ice against the New York Islanders as the team begins a four-game road trip. His arrival comes with strong support from teammates and coaches alike. Frondell was selected third overall in the 2025 NHL Draft and signed a three-year entry-level deal last July. Before joining Chicago, he spent the season with Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish Hockey League, where he scored 20 goals and added 8 assists in 43 games. His team's promotion to the SHL this year gave him a taste of higher-level competition, something he believes prepared him well for the NHL.

On the international stage, Frondell represented Sweden at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship. There, he recorded 5 goals and 3 assists in just 7 games, further proving his offensive ability. His debut night was a family affair, with his parents and sister travelling from Sweden to watch him play. Coach Jeff Blashill kept his advice simple, telling Frondell to 'just be him' and not to feel pressured to perform right away. The young forward was placed on a line with star centre Connor Bedard and winger Ryan Greene, even earning time on the top power-play unit. Bedard, the 2023 first overall pick, has already expressed optimism about Frondell's potential impact on the team. The Blackhawks currently sit 7th in their division, holding a 26-31-13 record after 63 games. Recent struggles include losses to Minnesota, Vegas, and an overtime defeat to Dallas. Despite their position, the team hopes Frondell's arrival can inject fresh energy into the lineup.

Frondell's first NHL game marks the start of what the Blackhawks hope will be a promising career. With his family in attendance and a strong support system in the locker room, he now looks to settle into the league. The team's road trip will provide an early test of his ability to adapt at hockey's highest level.
