14-year-old Suryavanshi shatters IPL record, smashing first T20 century, as Rajasthan dominates
In an electrifying display, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the youngest IPL debutant in history, stole the show at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium, gracing the pitch with a 100 off a mind-boggling 35 balls. The young prodigy annihilated the opposition with a scorching barrage of seven fours and 11 sixes, his record-breaking innings setting the stadium ablaze.
His performance triumphantly surpassed Vijay Zol's record from 2013, boasting 18 years and 118 days as the previous youngest IPL debutant in an Indian domestic match. Suryavanshi's awe-inspiring century is the second fastest in the popular T20 tournament, barely trailing behind Chris Gayle's 30-ball ton for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013.
Despite his brilliant performance, Suryavanshi was finally dismissed for 101, a victim of fast bowler Prasidh Krishna's delivery after 38 balls. The crowd leaped to their feet, showering the young star with a standing ovation.
His whirlwind partnership with fellow left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal catalyzed their team's pursuit of 210. The duo secured the target with 25 balls and eight wickets to spare, with Jaiswal remaining unbeaten at 70 and joining Suryavanshi in a 41-run, unbeaten stand with stand-in-skipper Riyan Parag, who clinched the winning six in a brisk 15-ball 32.
While Suryavanshi's masterclass stole the limelight, opposition batsmen, such as Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill, who scored 84, and Jos Buttler, who remained not out on 50, put up a resilient fight. Gujarat, however, managed only 209-4 in their total, which was no match for Suryavanshi's explosive batting prowess.
He managed to hit Afghanistan quick Karim Janat for three fours and three sixes in a single 30-run over. The match ended with Gujarat stationed third on the 10-team table, having amassed six wins from nine matches.
Rajasthan's chances of advancing into the final four remain precarious, as they stand seventh with three wins and seven defeats, leaving their hopes hanging by a thread.
With Suryavanshi's stratospheric rise to fame, having been bought by the Rajasthan Royals for £105,000 and previously scoring a 58-ball hundred for India U19s against Australia U19s, this prodigy is a star on the ascent that is set to rewrite cricket history.
