10-Year-Old with SMA Signs One-Day Penguins Contract via Make-A-Wish
A 10-year-old boy from Prince Edward Island has lived out a dream with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Myer Gallant, who has spinal muscular atrophy, signed a special one-day contract through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His visit came as the team faced a tough stretch on the ice.
Myer Gallant traveled from O’Leary, Prince Edward Island, to join the Penguins on 14 January 2026. He watched the team’s practice from the boards and shared breakfast with the players in their locker room. Later, he wore Sidney Crosby’s No. 87 jersey during a press conference alongside general manager Kyle Dubas.
The Gallant family had previously made the long drive to Tampa Bay last season to see the Penguins play the Lightning. Myer, like Crosby and Penguins defenseman Ryan Graves, hails from Canada’s Maritime provinces. His one-day contract highlighted the connection between the team and its young fans.
Before Myer’s visit, the Penguins had struggled, losing eight straight games (0-4-4). They then won six in a row but hit another rough patch, scoring just two goals in three consecutive losses (0-2-1). His arrival coincided with a moment of reflection for the club, both on and off the ice.
Myer will also attend the Penguins’ game against the Philadelphia Flyers at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday.
The visit underscored how sports can inspire young people and bring communities together. Myer’s experience with the Penguins gave him a day to remember. Meanwhile, the team continues its season with a mix of challenges and recent victories.
